The Coxen Circle honours those who have
generously chosen to leave a gift in their
Will to Queensland Museum. It is named in
recognition of Charles and Elizabeth Coxen.

In 1862 the Queensland
Philosophical Society founded
the Queensland Museum in
Brisbane, operating from a
room set aside in the Old
Windmill, which still stands
in Spring Hill.
A passionate naturalist, Charles Coxen (1809–
1876) was the first curator and secretary
of Queensland Museum. His wife Elizabeth
(1825–1906) was the first female member of
the Royal Society of Queensland. Together,
they helped establish Queensland Museum’s
early collections and its reputation for
excellence.
Members of the Coxen Circle continue this
legacy of exploration and education, ensuring
Queensland Museum remains a place of
inspiration and knowledge.
